Homegrown Terrorism



Terrorism is terrorist activity either made on one's homeland or made on another person's country, which is/has become a huge concern for the United States. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, the US has taken huge measures to make sure there were not foreign attacks made on US soil again, but what about domestic attacks? The attacks of 9/11 left more than 3,000 civilians dead and more injured, but the number of deaths caused by homegrown terrorism far exceeds that number. Because of the amount of homegrown terrorism in the US one starts to think is homegrown terrorism a bigger threat to the US than international terrorism?

Post 9/11 Attacks Made on the US

In 2001, under Resolution 1373, all 192 members of the UN agreed that terrorism a serious domestic crime, abiding by or abetting to terrorism, or material–helping terrorists would be serious offenses. Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security expressed her huge concern on the rise of homegrown terrorism. Since 9/11 there have been 37 domestic terrorist attacks on US soil. The Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation states that the dangers of the al–Qaeda organization have receded due to the growing threat of homegrown terrorists. The most talked about homegrown terrorist attacks were the Fort Hood Mass shooting, Boston Marathon bombing, San Bernardino attack, the Orlando Nightclub shooting,
