When my parents told me that we would be going to Oregon for spring break, I was super excited because I had never been on a plane, let alone to a state more foreign than Minnesota. During our first module of Performance Cultures, we explored and researched into the counter cultures of the 1960's; how those movements shaped not only the development of the performance world but also the culture of modern day life. A prominent factor in the culture of the 1960's was the art of protest. We as class researched heavily into the different areas of protest during that time, as it really was an era in which the 'people' fought back against governments and elitist institutes. To begin, we looked at the 'Hippie' culture; their shared beliefs and the changes they were trying to make in the world. Many hippies used music to portray their political and cultural views. The use of music meant that the messages were available to all, instead of being restricted to those with the 'right' education on politics. A huge proprietor within the hippie society was Bob Dylan who used the music industry to spread their messages through songs such as "Masters of War" (1963) and "Blowin' in the Wind" (1963). Protest songs were not only used throughout the hippie movement, but are a thread that ties together many of the counter–cultures in the 1960's such as punk, and black rights movements through soul and funk music. Due to the general conservatism in Iberian culture, Spain being the cause of that, Latin America did not follow the steps towards modernity, unlike French colonized countries. After the colonization period, Latin America spent its time conserving Spanish culture. The Iberian Peninsula culture did not have the same opening into the modernity that France had. It wasn't until the 1880's through the 1910's that 'modernismo', an anti–nationalist literary movement, arose within Latin America itself, making it a homegrown movement. Modernismo was the rejuvenation of the Spanish language and its literature. Modernismo's literature boom allowed for the growth of other literature movements including that magical realism movement. Since the story could not pick a time, it actually gave the reader a form of date. It was a time from last century seeing how the scientist was now learning facial cream and dermatology against the form of birthmark. It struck me not only accord but actually offended that the husband was that much concern over a tiny speck which was the wife's birthmark. Marjorie Pickthall constructs an elegant poem, Adam and Eve, while reinterpreting the well–known Biblical story, Adam and Eve. Similar to Pickthall, a renaissance artist, Masaccio, however, interprets the Biblical story of Adam and Eve with a different interpretation. In his painting, the expulsion of Eden, he focuses on Adam and Eve's reaction while leaving the Garden of Eden. Although Pickthal and Masaccio have different prescripts of the story of Adam and Eve, both adopt the same plot. While arriving in the perfect garden of Eden, Eve is suddenly attracted to the forbidden fruit. 'Beguiled by the serpent', Eve eats the fruit, passing it on to her husband, and is then banished, along with Adam, from the Garden of Eden. Because Pickthall uses artistic license and a rhyme scheme, she constructs a poem, indirectly relating to Masaccio's painting, the expulsion of Eden, and directly relating to the bible.

Due to Pickthall's usage of artistic license in her poem,a new meaning arises in relation to the Bible. The major instance of artistic license in Adam and Eve, the location in which the whole story takes place in, The Garden of Eden, changes to "Beauty".
