The Characteristics Of Sympathism In Bartleby, The Scrivener
Nothing is more patience trying than watching paint slowly dry, the one exception to this sentiment however, maybe the patience of a wise kind man being tested to his absolute limit.
This is certainly apparent as you envelope yourself into the story of "Bartleby, The Scrivener". It is for several reasons that we have sympathised with the character "Lawyer". For one, Bartleby, soon after being hired, began refusing to do the duties required of him for his job. The Lawyer would let this behaviour slip despite complaints from the other workers of the office. Secondly during the story there is a point when the Lawyer realizes Bartleby has been squatting at his firm. He again chooses not to punish or scold, but rather offer him a place to live. And for some reason Bartleby again says no. Lastly we get to the point of Bartleby being placed in jail. At this point most people's sympathies might have gone out the window, but The Lawyer is no ordinary man in this aspect. He still feels guilty and even decides to go see Bartleby. It is in these following paragraphs that we will convey our sympathies toward The Lawyer's relentless attempts to help Bartleby.
At first, the illusion of a good work ethic is put forth by Bartleby. Nevertheless this commitment is short lived and he begins refusing to do his work stating "I would prefer not to" anytime he is asked to review his copies documents.
