The Case Study 7.2 Karla, African American Salesperson

Step 1: Identify surface problems

The treatment of Karla by her coworkers is the main surface problem because she seemed to be avoided by her coworkers who do not invite her to social gatherings after work. I assume that she is not treated as a "social buddy" may be because she is African American or may be it could be a result of her work ethic. It is the job of the manager (Daniel) to address this issue immediately before it goes far, to avoid creating an unfriendly or/and hostile work environment that might affect the productivity.

Step 2: Ask Why–Why to get root problem

There is no doubt that the root problem is stereotypical cultural that does not allow the social mixing of different races inside and outside of work environment. The cause might be a lack of Diversity training that could probably give and allow employees to have open mind and wider work views
