Based on a true story, "Defiance," directed by Edward Zwick, is an extraordinary and insightful tale about the lives of three brothers that take refuge in the woods for survival against the Nazis. In the beginning, their main goal was to keep alive by also avenging the deaths of their parents, however as the movie progresses, their mission turns into something far more bigger. They began to find other Jews who come hoping to join them in their quest for survival, while looking to them as their leaders. The film entails only a few scenes of their battles against the Nazis, and the drama of the story tends to be focused on the conflicts and romances that arise within the Jews. Instead of it being fixated on the lives of the Jews living in concentration camps or the ghettos, there setting takes place outside in the forest where they have to take on even more problems and adapt themselves to nature's environment. The Jews had to start from the bottom, but eventually they created an efficient and resilient community. They were forced to build shelters out of material such as wood and tree stems found in the forest. The refugees organized leadership roles by the various skills of the Jews. Most were skilled craftsmen, artisans, and laborers, but soon became fighters and soldiers, gun cleaners, and shoemakers. Women were deemed the task of preparing the meals, and keeping up with the children. They also had the impossible task of having to find weapons and ammunition to survive.
Along with their environmental situations, the Jews were faced with the problem of lack of food. With their group continuously growing, they turned to stealing food from other farmers in the area. This was a good plan at first, however they had to take the chance that the farmers would tell the Germans about their encounters. At some point, food was so scarce that people became tumultuous towards one another. You could see how humans reacted when put under these unthinkable situations.
