Alchemy was a turning point in the field of science during the Middle Ages, and paved the way for many of the greatest scientists in history, including Albert Einstein. Contrary to popular belief, alchemy is not just about "science," but also about humans spiritually and mentally. Alchemy may have been lost over the course of many centuries, but it is still very much alive in our society today, through our relationships with other people and within ourselves. This greatly contrasts from spiritual alchemy, which works to cultivate and perfect one's soul. Mental alchemy had lots of parallels with physical alchemy. Take the Four elements, for example. In people, they can represent positive virtues and characteristics, but can also symbolize negative traits. Fire can represent courage and enthusiasm, but also anger and jealousy. Water can represent love and creativity, and instability. Earth can represent patience and strength, but also laziness and boredom. Lastly, Air can represent diligence and optimism, but also frivolity and boasting. These Four Elements were common to all people. Spiritual alchemy was completely different from Mental alchemy. Alchemical meditation is an example of some of the practices within Spiritual alchemy. In alchemical meditation, there are three goals which alchemists aim to achieve; Lunar, Solar, and Stellar. Lunar meditations work on the physical level, Solar works on the psychological and mental level, and Stellar works on the divine and cosmic level.
