Amy Lowell's Poem 'Decade'

Amy Lowell's poem, "Decade" shows how a person can go from infatuation or "puppy love" to pure love and admiration. Lowell demonstrates this through her use of similes and imagery. You start off by reading the title, "Decade". Lowell uses this title to describe the passage of time that happens throughout the poem. Although this poem is considered short, ten years have passed. Lowell also demonstrates a passage of time by changing the tenses in which she speaks. In the first stanza she uses past tense words like "when", "were", and "burnt". Later on in the poem she changes the tense to present and starts using words like "now", "are", and "know". The poem is essentially about someone who experiences love at first sight. Lowell uses another simile to start off this stanza, just like she did in the last one. "Now you are like morning bread, smooth and pleasant." This indicates that the love that she once felt is not quite as intense as it was ten years ago when they had first met. She goes on to say, "I hardly taste you at all". This again is an example of how the intense fierce feelings she once had has simmered down. She now knows that their love is true and pure because she does not need to taste the sweetness as often as before. She can be completely nourished just by the "morning bread". "I hardly taste you at all" can be seen as a dismissal, as if she is saying that she barely knows who her love has turned into after all of this time. Then she finishes the statement with, "for I know your savour". This indicates that she actually means the opposite. Their bond is so strong that she does not know where she ends and the other person begins. It is almost as if they have become one person. Although the love is less intense now, Lowell still wants us to know that the love is still there, and just as strong, but in a different way.
