Our company has operated as the leader in our industry for a long time. We have since fallen behind in regards to our competitors in that, we have not implemented a fatigue management program. The proposed program will operate at a significant loss ($1.5 million in the first year) with an annual drop in cost of 10–12%. The cost of the program past year five will be $900,000. With that being said, the possibility of lowering our liability in terms of potential incidents in the future significantly outweighs the associated costs of our program. Overall, pilots and supervisors have a positive outlook on the implementation of a fatigue management program. In addition to pilots not being fatigued while on duty, when the research team spoke with our partner airlines, one of the airlines showed data that demonstrated a 10–15% rise in productivity. Therefore, the following recommendations are presented to the board:
1. Implement the fatigue management program as soon as possible. The potential gains and liability decrease significantly outweigh the initial financial burden incurred by our airline.
2. Continue to communicate with our partner airlines, as they will provide essential information pertaining to the implementation of the program.
3. Clear all proposed changes and introductions with the FAA, as they do have the final say in all facets of operation regarding safety.
4. Consult with supervisors around our domestic hubs to determine the best way to implement the program.
