A Visit to Williams Williams, AZ, is a historic town located west of Flagstaff in Coconino County. With a population of a little over 3000 permanent residents, Williams seems like just any other small town lost in the mountains of northern Arizona, but nothing could be further from the truth. In an area originally called Wii Gvʼul by the indigenous Havasupai people, the town of Williams was founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1901. Bill Williams, a locally renowned scout, trapper, and an all–around Mountain Man, was the inspiration for naming the town. Bill Williams Mountain, just south of town, is also named for him. The Williams Historic Business District and Urban Route 66, Williams are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Grand Canyon Railroad (GCR), has its main depot and terminus in Williams. Started by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway in 1901, early GCR passengers included famed naturalist John Muir who wrote how impressed he was with the railroad's limited impact on the local environment. Costs for the 64–mile trip was $3.95. In 1905, the Santa Fe company opened El Tovar, a hotel for visitors who wanted to spend the night at the Grand Canyon. Constructed just 20 feet from the edge of the South Rim, El Tovar afforded its guests an unparalleled view of the Canyon. The hotel is still in use today. The rise in automobile ownership after World War II caused suspension of operations of the GCR in 1968. On its final trip in July of that year, the train carried only three passengers. In the mid–1980's, the line was purchased by Max and Thelma Beigert and on September 17, 1989, began its new life and once again started carrying passengers to the Grand
