Breaking Home Ties: Rockwell's Interpretation of the Empty Nest Syndrome The feeling of grief and loneliness parents may feel when their children leave home for the first time in order to live on their own or attend a college or university is known as the Empty Nest Syndrome. When my parents and I watched my older brother venture out of the only home he had known for eighteen years to begin a new chapter of his life, I personally felt this syndrome's effects. I had to adjust to him no longer sitting at the dinner table with us every evening or giving me rides to school in the morning or walking the halls with me at school, and I know that my parents will also have to learn to adapt once more when I myself graduate high school in a year and a half. This empty feeling, caused by the abrupt absence of someone who has always been in your life and is suddenly not around anymore, is most likely what also captivated Norman Rockwell during 1954 when he painted Breaking Home Ties.

Through the inspiration of Rockwell's own personal troubles, as he mourned the absence of his three sons who had all recently left home for universities, he was able to tell a story similar to his own through his painting. His depiction of a farmer boy and his father and dog waiting for a train that will take the young man to college conveys the sense of poignancy that all American families will experience when their children inevitably leave them to begin their own individual lives.
