Diversity and representation has been in an increased demand over the past few years. Even children's TV producers and creators are taking notice by including LGBT and all sorts of ethnic characters in their shows. However, it seems that Hollywood has yet to take note.
For the second year in a row, the Oscars have failed to bring diversity to this year's nominations. Many expressed their frustration online, taking to Twitter using the hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite, and saying they will be boycotting the event. Jada Pinkett Smith announced on social media that she will not be attending the Oscars because of their lack of diversity. Later, Will Smith, who starred in Concussion, says he stands by his wife. The Smith family is not the only group of celebrities to be boycotting the Oscars. Celebrities such as Spike Lee, Tyrese Gibson, as well as Snoop Dogg all announced they will neither attend nor watch the Oscars. Even Oscar nominee, Mark Ruffalo gives support to the boycott. Clearly, the Latino, Asian, and Native American community do not have the representation they deserve in the media – the roles for other minorities are not there and there is ZERO reason for their absence. Would the Martian, a movie about a fictional space trip to mars, be any different with a Latino? Would the movie Room, another fictional movie based off a book, be any different with a Native American actress? There is no reason to be casting movies with white actors and actresses if it does not matter to the plot, and that is something Hollywood has yet to
