Summary: Roscigno et al (2006) talk about spatial inequalities in educational achievement and attainment in this article. Local conditions shape family and school resources. Therefore, the availability of family and school resources vary in rural areas, inner city, and suburban areas. Disparity in resources influences educational investment at the family and school levels. At the result, achievement and attainment are different in those places. This distinction helps us to understand the rate of educational investment in inner city, rural and suburban areas. While family educational investment constrained by depressed income, poor educated parent, and family disruption, educational investment has discretionary dimension. This is right for school too. Even though lack of school resources constrain school investment in inner city and rural areas, insufficient educational return to those areas may discourage such communities from investing resources in education. (P2123–2124) In order to understand the disparities in family resources, authors point out that inner city and rural areas have high rate of families with low income and low educated parents. Therefore, these families in these areas have low household educational items, cultural capital, and parental involvement. At the result, students in these areas end up with lower achievement and attainment than students in the suburban areas. (P2131)
At the school level table2 shows, inner city and rural schools offer more free lunch than suburban schools do. Suburban schools consist of higher rate of white students than inner city schools.
