English Class Analysis

English classes in high school and middle schools tend to focus more on the writing part of the subject, and I actually used to think English classes and writing classes were the same. Therefore, it was surprising for me to learn new material in Dr. Holterhoff's class Visual Culture, Digital Archives, and H. Rider Haggard. This class focused more on making posters that help you be convincing, as well as presentation skills. We also learned how to analyse the posters in a written format so that a person reading it, or hearing the presentation, could understand the reasoning behind a particular format for a project. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...It required "students in groups of 4 or 5... read one of Haggard's fifty novels." The groups would then make a spreadsheet with tags about characters, location, themes etc., and present an argument based on the tags. The project was also accompanied by a "statement reflecting on the assignment and explaining which of these visualisations reveal[ed] the most compelling, surprising, and/ or historically significant argument about their data." My group decided to read the book the People of the Mist by H. Rider Haggard, an adventure fiction about a man wanting to go back to England with wealth gained from African soil. Three visualisations were created: one comparing the postures of male and female characters, another comparing the colours used to illustrate one female protagonist, and the last stating the importance of the theme religion in the novel and how this could be seen. The poster about postures was a bar graph made on PowerPoint, while the second was a plotline made on Keynote, and the third was a bar graph on number of times an illustration was used across editions and a venn diagram comparing/contrasting the two religions that appeared: also made on Keynote. As there were problems meeting with the group in this project as well, efficiency and productivity were prefered over being original and making it visually inspiring.
