Animal Testing Animal testing began when William Harvey used animals 400 years ago to find out how blood circulated through the body. The "modern" era of animal research however started about 150 years ago with the rise of physiology as a science. It was very different back then. There were no anesthetics or effective painkillers, so the animals suffered a great deal, as did patients. Scientists learned that putting animals, or humans through that type of torture was inhumane. There are many myths to animal testing. Many groups such as Animal Liberation Front (ALF) contest that domestic animals are not receiving their rights and that this is not justice. (BBC. 2006) However, studies have shown and proven that only 0.4% of all research animals are cats, dogs, and monkeys. 80% of animals being used are mice, rats, fish, amphibians, birds, rabbits, and the occasional pig or sheep. No matter what the animal, being used, a licensed breeder must specially breed it. Another issue that is a big deal, yet is easily justified is the anesthetics. Anesthesia is used to prevent suffering. Most procedures (60% in the UK) are so mild that giving an anesthetic would mean more suffering than the experiment itself. (RDS 2006).

Members of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) suggested that animals are not the same as humans so there is no logical reason to why they should test products on animals. Obviously there are differences between animals and people. Under the skin or fur, the biology of humans and other mammals is surprisingly similar.
