People are discontent when someone or something is ruling over them. Whether it is African American slaves being ruled by white masters, people being ruled by their societies, or people under the rule of their government communities are discontent with the outcome. Truth's argument is close to that of abolitionists, but freedom is more than just freedom from slavery. Furthermore, she cannot be truly free until she is released from the social prejudices associated with her gender that are restraining her. If she does not stay in her assigned place she risks being expelled from society. Similar to Truth, Bartleby is also given a place in society. He too is discontent with what society chose for him. He may not be enslaved to a human master, but he is not completely free since society still dictates what he is allowed to do with his life. As a result, Bartleby rebelled against societal norms and uses his independence to diverge from what society's expectations even if it is detrimental to his health.
