FIU Athletic Case Study
For any athletic program during any sporting event, a brawl breaking out between the two opposing teams could be considered an undesirable situation. During a game between the Florida International University Golden Panthers and the Miami Hurricanes, that very thing happened and severe punishments were handed down by both programs to those involved. On October 14, 2016, a game between these two "cross town rivals" took place, and there was trash talk and penalties throughout the game. All of these penalties and trash talk led to a brawl that took place after a touchdown catch by running back James Bryant. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...According to Florida International's athletic department mission statement (2014), "participation in FIU Athletics will provide student–athletes with the opportunity to pursue a quality education in one of America's leading urban universities and develop a value system which encourages discipline, teamwork, self–confidence, and leadership skills, and sportsmanship in an equitable and diverse environment" (p.15). Had this sentence not been a part of their mission statement prior to this event, it would have made for a perfect addition to their mission statement after the brawl occurred. Every student athlete involved in this brawl should have received a rougher punishment than what was handed down to them. It is unclear what Florida International's mission statement was prior to this incident, however, based upon their current mission statement those athletes would receive the harsh punishment they deserve. Based upon what the Florida International University Athletic Department's mission statement currently states, those athletes involved in this brawl should have not just received a dismissal from the team, but a dismissal from the school as well. Those athletes who do not deserve the scholarships they are handed and embarrass the institution they are attending do not deserve to attend
