Law Code Of Hammurabi Analysis
The Law code of Hammurabi is an inscription of laws on a well preserved stele artifact. The Babylonian King Hammurabi included not only new laws but law codes from the Sumerians and Akkadians. Since Hammurabi included these ideas from previous codes this can prove that these laws were not only written but also enforced. The laws of Hammurabi have a common theme of solving problems with getting even or unjustly consequences so that they don't go against his laws, the topics such as domestic situations, work relations, and exchange all exemplify this theme within their law. There is a significant amount of laws regarding the domestic life, in which some solve their dilemmas with a penalty that can lead to death. For example, Law 132 demonstrates how if a subject is being accused of wrong doing they will have to somehow go through a consequence that proves their innocence, "If the 'finger is pointed' at a man's wife about another man, but she is not caught sleeping with the other man, she shall jump into the river for her husband" (The Law Code of Hammurabi p.34). In this law the woman would have to prove her innocence by jumping in the river, that could potentially lead to her death. The significance of the river is something that the Mesopotamian people know prior to the laws. They know that the river can easily cause death to those who cannot swim, but they can justify this by stating it can prove those who are guilty from innocent.
