Life History Adrian Summary
The individual selected to interview to understand their Life History was Adrian, a twenty–six–year–old from El Salvador. The interview started out with the author asking Adrian for a picture of what growing up was like for him. Though he and the author are often assumed to be Hispanic, only she is, and being Salvadorian is different. Adrian came to the United States when he was very young and lived in New York until about middle school when he moved to Texas. In New York, Adrian experienced more tolerance of his differences in school but expressed facing adversity when moving to Texas. When asked for an example of difficulties, Adrian volunteered that he was called a 'Beaner' in school for the first time despite clarifying with the perpetrators. For differences, he said his parents raised him to appreciate the opportunity of living in the United States, but to avoid glamorizing its society. The author connected this to the ethnocentrism that exists within her home country. American's often view their culture and government as superior, and those who immigrate are encouraged to believe that as well. Adrian continued to talk about the personality of his mother but mentioned his dad had considered himself a member of El Salvador's Official Communist Party. In the author's countries history Communism is something that was historically fought against by its democratic government. The author mentioned that coming to a Democratic nation must have been difficult for his dad, to which Adrian said it still is. Adrian explained that through attending college, he learned that fighting Communism has led to a Cold War and could lead to a Hot War in the United States
