The poem, " To sleep", and the excerpt from Macbeth, "Macbeth doth murder sleep", both share the common theme of escaping reality and the desire to calm the mind from reality. The major difference is that in Keats poem, the character seems to be bothered by someone and wants an escape and seems to justifiably want a piece of mind. Whereas in Macbeth, he says that he doesn't deserve the piece of mind and that he's guilty of murder. Murder is one of the most egregious crimes that could ever be committed. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...The reader can see that the author wrote the poem about someone who is clearly bothered by some tragedy or depression occurrence. "Save me from curious Conscience that still hoards..."(Line 11). The main character is actively seeking to escape of that which is bothering him. The addressing of sleep through the use of an apostrophe is critical. He interprets that sleep would be a cleansing of the mind. In the sentence "...the amen, ere thy poppy throws Around my bed its lulling charities."(Lines 7–8) he is actually praying to G–d to give him peace. The title of the poem "To Sleep" and other references to sleep in the poem are actually a metaphor for an escape from reality. He is also trying to preserve a better state of mind and addresses sleep as an "embalmer". An alliteration of the "s" sound is also used in this poem with the same implication of accentuating the word 'sleep'. The reader can clearly see that Keats poem, "To Sleep" and Shakespeare's excerpt from Macbeth both clearly depict regret and sorrow.
