Male, Maldives and Climate Change
When you see this piece of art, you might just think "Wow, what a pretty picture of the ocean" and that is one way of looking at this picture. However, if you take a closer look, you will find that this picture is more than a picture of the ocean. If you haven't already noticed, this picture is actually made of over fifty pictures that I selected and formed into a mosaic. All of the pictures on here have something in common. They are pictures of the Maldives.
With this piece, I literally took the Maldives and turned it into an ocean. You might wonder why I chose to make the mosaic a picture of the ocean instead of a tropical island. The ocean is a symbolic representation of what may happen to the Maldives unless things change. As the flattest country on Earth, the Maldives is extremely susceptible to rising sea levels. Unfortunately over the past twenty years, the sea level has increase by 0.13 inches per year. This increase is double what is what it was in the prior eighty years. (National Geographic 2016) At this rate, the Maldives will be completely under water by 2085. (Mellino, Cole, 2016) The increase in sea level is not being caused by natural processes, it is actually being caused by us. The people that love going to the Maldives for vacations and call it one of the most beautiful places in the world are currently drowning it.
