My Dreams



"Ready, set, go!" The loud gun shot rang in my ears as I pushed forward and ahead of the crowd. It wasn't easy for me to be able to run like this.

About a month ago, I was living with my mother in a tiny hut by the river. "Mum, I fetched the water like you asked. Now can I go out with my friends?" I had never liked staying home with my mother doing chores. I preferred going outdoors and helping out at the farm.

"Rebecca, I thought we already talked about this. You are not going out again today! You are doing this for your future, to have a career and to have a family," my mother scolded me for never listening, but I knew what I wanted for my future.

"I will have a career and a family, Mother. I even have goals and dreams for my future too. I want to become an athlete!" I guess I shouldn't have said that, because my mother stopped sweeping and looked at me seriously.

"You want to be an athlete? Don't you how much we need to pay to allow you to do that? It's not even a proper job. How many people are able to become famous for doing that? You're wasting your time doing this. You could be studying for college or getting a part–time job right now. Go and milk the cows for tomorrow morning."

I suddenly felt really guilty at the thought of my father working out of town and my mother trying to take care of me and my two younger brothers. I should be helping my family, but what if I don't want to? I stood there frozen on the spot, wondering whether I was doing the
