New Road Bikes On Friday Morning
Doris and I ride our new road bikes on Friday morning. For ten minutes we warm up, and then, pedal in the direction to Malibu. The air is cool with early morning fog. Doris leads and I follow. Her pace is faster than usual. No problem. I ride my bike to ride my bike. I have a low–keyed Friday. I've scheduled a pitch meeting at eleven with a new writer. The agent I met recently said his client "Thinks out of the box." I would rather that and am keen to meet him. There's an hour before, so I print a copy of the development report. I read through, and highlight in yellow, the screenplays in limbo. I note what the problems are with the script/writer in a footnote at the bottom of the page. I reveal that the purpose of the bike ride is to raise money for leukemia research and to honor of an eleven–year old girl, Elizabeth, who died from the disease. "That's fantastic, thanks." When I arrive home, I eat a sparse dinner of fish, veggies, and brown rice. The food doesn't satisfy. I head to the kitchen to eat plain yogurt with berries. But devour an entire pint of French vanilla ice cream with two half–frozen brownies instead. After, I stay up late and binge watch the remaining episodes of "Game of Thrones." And fall asleep close to midnight. On Saturday morning, there's no time for coffee. I over slept. Doris drives us to meet Gordon and Zak at a street near Sepulveda. I sit in silence and run my tongue across my teeth. Yuck. I'd forgotten to brush them or my hair. And worse yet, I look disheveled wearing Khaki shorts, a worn tee shirt and a gray wool sweater with a hood. Not the bike apparel I bought in the REI store earlier this week. I glance over at Doris, who's wearing the perfect cycling outfit. Her appearance is flawless. When we meet up with Zak and Gordon, both are eager to get started.
