The discovery and understanding of the Hammurabi Codes has been without doubt one of the most important events that has changed the world. The Hammurabi Codes were established by one of Babylons first kings named Hammurabi who reined for about 55 years he lived from 2123 to 2081 BCE. The reason for why he felt the need to establish the Hammurabi codes was because he wanted his people to live in a society where they could live in peace and feel safe and secure. The way that decisions were met during a dispute was by judges that were assigned by the Babylonian Empire. The process of what is now know as a trial during this period was that individuals had to show up to discuss the issue or problem before the judges. These individuals had to provide their own witnesses to prove that what they were saying was the truth. Regular people of the town were also invited at times to help the judges with the outcome of their decisions and today we know these individuals as the jury. The values of the Babylonian society were straight to the point. "A person was believed innocent until proven guilty," and once an individual was proven guilty they had to face to punishment to what they were found guilty, and in the Babylonian society this meant "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."3 In some of these cases the accuser would not have enough evidence to support his case and he would be punished for accusing others of breaking these codes. This is very similar to how we deal with everyday cases and crimes that we still have today.
