From the beginning of art history, great artists mentored other great artists. Pablo Picasso, master of art, studied and mentored under Diego Velazquez and Francisco Goya and was inspired by the works of El Greco and Caravaggio. Over time, Picasso worked and become one of the most infamous artists of all time. He is remembered even today and is know world wide for his works. If Picasso, one of the greatest artists of all time, was sufficiently taught through mentorship and through guiding rather than restraining, why is art not taught like this today? One movement aims to return to this style of teaching and poses a threat to the university style of teaching art. This movement, the alternative art school movement, offers students mentorship from current artists, freedom in creation, and low to no cost programs. It is exigent liberal arts colleges make the transition to the style of teaching offered by alternative art schools offer now to remain competitive and retain students in their art programs.
