Throughout history, man has created and listened to music for many purposes. Music has served to express emotions such as joy or sorrow, and has done so very effectively. Music has been a tool of communication in this way, helping one man to understand another and providing a medium of interconnection. Every known society throughout history has had some form of music. Some would look at music as a small footnote in the progression of humanity, it is in fact a much greater force; for some, it defines their very existence (Andrew). The fact is, music is a driving force in society; it has been present since the dawn of man. Andrew then explains how though some results are questionable, the consensus view seems to be that music has the capacity for both positive and negative effects. Listening to music as a background activity has been shown to positively affect mood, productivity, and even intelligence. Music can make us feel a certain way. Music sets moods and creates atmospheres. So in short, music has the power to culturally, morally, and emotionally influence our society.
