Regional Enterprise Tower Essay
The former Alcoa Headquarters, now known as the Regional Enterprise Tower, was designed in 1951 by an architectural firm named Harrison and Abramovitz (Regional). Wallace K. Harrison was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1895 (Muriel), and Max Abramovitz was born in Chicago Illinois in 1908 (Max Abramovitz). They completed the building in 1953 with the help of two other architectural firms named Altenhof & Bown and Mitchell & Ritchey (Toker). Other buildings in Pittsburgh that Harrison and Abramovitz have built include the US Steel Tower, the Westing House Tower, and the Three Mellon Tower (Harrison).
The original function of the Regional Enterprise Tower was to house the corporate headquarters for Alcoa which is short for the Aluminum Company of America (Toker). From December 7, 1903 to April 29, 1950, the Regional Enterprise Tower was also the home to the first incarnation of the downtown Nixon Theater (The Alcoa Building). A small corporate business called RIDC also started in this building (Daparma).
The building was mainly constructed of glass and aluminum panels (Toker). According to the
