Similarities Between The White Tiger And Slumdog Millionaire
The texts "White Tiger" and "Slumdog Millionaire" both describe an India where rise to power or success is impossible without corruption. In "The White Tiger" the first case of bribery or corruption is at the voting booths. At the beginning of the text a rickshaw puller was sick and tired of being trapped within the "Coop". He decided to stand up for his rights and vote against The Great Socialist. While everyone else was conforming to the ideas that had been thrust upon them, he wanted his voice to be heard and not someone else to be talking for him. "The White Tiger" is written as sequence of oral letters made by the protagonist, Balram Halwai, to the Premier of China, Mr Wen Jiabao. As the reader of the text, we are positioned in a way that we almost embody Mr Wen Jiabao who is Premier of China. At the same time it appears as we are a 3rd person to this depiction who is just watching Balram Halwai or Ashok Sharma as he is now known, narrate this story to premier Wen Jiabao. The way the text is written it makes the reader feel as if they are in fact the premier at times.
Symbolism
"The Darkness" is an area that the rural area of India. The darkness is where Laxmangarh, Balrams village is located . The village is fed by "The River of Death" which is The Ganges. This is called the river of death because it is the final resting place of millions of India's dead as they are cremated and released into its waters. The Darkness is a significant symbol because is represents the "Second India", the India that has not yet seen the light.
