Gatsby and Tom's Horse Race: Tom, Sloane, and a pretty woman arrived at Gatsby's house on horseback. As they were all about to leave, Gatsby urged them to stay for supper because he wanted to learn more about Tom. The lady enthusiastically asked Gatsby and Nick to go to supper at her house instead. Tom, on the contrary, did not want Gatsby to attend the dinner party and mockingly accused Gatsby of not owning a horse for Gatsby was far from elegant. To Tom's surprise, Gatsby did own a horse and he claimed it to be the fastest horse in the East. Gatsby would ride in the army and since then has grown very fond of horseback riding. Tom, being a professional polo player, believed he had a better horse and challenged Gatsby to a race. Gatsby accepted and they all rode to Tom's house where he had horse racing stadium. When they arrived, the stadium was already being filled in by the dozens and high bids began to get placed.
The race began with a gun shot. Whoever pulled up in first out of 4 laps was the winner. Gatsby had a huge lead by the end of the first lap then Tom began to gain speed and they were neck and neck all through out the second and third lap. Finishing the fourth lap it appeared as if though Tom's horse felt a restraint and Gatsby pulled up easily and took the win. Wolsheim had made an appearance at the race so people began to accuse him of what happened to Tom's horse thinking he rigged the game
