Strong theme, harsh tone, powerful message, good dialog, strong character development, an overall amazing story. Paolo Bacigalupi's sci–fi post–apocalyptic book Ship Breaker includes everything a book would need to attract multiple audiences, and keep readers intrigued.
Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi is set in a post–apocalyptic world where the ocean levels have risen and oil is scarce. The story focuses on a boy named Nailer. Who is on a light crew. He gets in the air ducts and small spaces in beached and broken ships. They do this because they are younger and smaller than everybody else. They then collect what the other people could not. Bacigalupi creates strong character development with Nailer. He starts out the book with Nailer being afraid of his father and is sceptical of killing and the subject of death. But once he sees Blue Eyes get killed he realizes that killing is essential to survive in his world. In the beginning of the story one of his light crew members, Sloth, doesn't help him out of a oil tanker. Nailer is forced to do it himself, and is ready to die. But then he realizes that he must man up and get out of the tanker. This is where Nailers determination, later in the story, comes from.
Whilst reading the story you will feel like it has gone by fast. This has to do with Bacigalupi's writing. He writes in a very fast paced way, but when he needs to slow down and focus on something he will. He also writes with a lot of figurative language which creates a picture of what is happening in the reader's
