In Anne Tyler's Saint Maybe as well as in the real world, it is possible to recognize the dangers in promoting unattainable perfection in masking your life and being unsatisfied with your life. Tyler uses the idea of masking your life in order to highlight why trying to achieve perfection can be dangerous. The author illustrates the theme by using Lucy and the way in which she masks her life from everyone around her. When questioning Lucy's truthfulness about her new dress, Ian thinks, "She hadn't bought that dress at all. Someone had given it to her. She wasn't out shopping. She was meeting someone" (Tyler 31). Doug Bedloe spent his whole life as what people thought of as the "perfect" working husband and father. He would do the daily tasks of going to work, coming home to dinner, and spending time with his family. He was so caught up in living that perfect life that when his retirement came he was lost as to what to do. He attempted to find several hobbies, but none worked for him. This displays the need to find what you enjoy in life and not spend it trying to perfect your role because in the end what you thought was perfect will end up being dissatisfying. In the real–world, the dangers in promoting unachievable perfection can be seen by people who spend their time attempting to be perfect and end up wasting their entire life. When people get to a certain age and become wiser, they begin to reflect back on their lives. If you spend your whole life trying to achieve perfection, when you get to that point you will realize the experiences and opportunities you missed out while hiding the real
