The Alternative Learning Program For Swain County High School
SCHS is in a major transition point. There are many issues that need to be addressed and developed. After discussion with the principal, it was determined that this would be an on–going process. This team would serve as data collection and analysis group. Since we could not "fix" or address all the issues we discussed them and prioritized them, deciding to bite off a chunk at a time. Below are the recommendations, timeline, strategies, and rationale behind the strategy.
School Setting:
Swain County High School is the only high school in the county. It is situated about a mile on the outskirts of a small town with 5 stoplights. The school currently enrolls 584 students. It houses a newly restructured Alternative Learning Program. The Alternative Learning Program houses 31 students. The high school also has a Freshman Academy which accommodates 156 students. These students are housed in a separate building for 50% of the day and then branch out to their electives. Both of these are initiatives that stemmed from high drop–out rates. The high school has recently gone through yet another leadership change. The school is now on its 4th principal in the past 5 years. It has seen 3 assistant principals in the past 4 years.
Community Setting: Swain County is a small rural community with a population of 14,717. 24% is made up of children ages 0–19, while another 25% is people 60 or older. The Community has a small tax base as 70% of our county is Federal land or Park. Swain County
