Joshua Nabong UNIV 200 MWF 3 PM Professor Meier December 5, 2014 The Effects and Dangers of Online Anonymity Years since the creation of computers, the Internet has been established that allows people to have access inside a huge cyberspace. The Internet served two purposes: to create a network that allows people to share and transfer files with one another and to create a web of information that helps people find what they are looking for. With the everlasting growth and improvements that shape the way the Internet is today, it has become an important aspect in many people's personal lives that makes communication with others much more convenient. The most important feature of online communication as opposed to face–to–face communication is that anybody is capable of concealing their identity completely, making them anonymous online and giving a deeper meaning to the word stranger. Kimberly Christopherson, a research assistant for Crimes against Children Research Center in the University of New Hampshire, acknowledges both the positive and negative qualities of anonymity, since it allows people to feel more secure online by hiding their identity, but also leads to more group polarization, which can affect human relationships (Christopherson 3042). Anonymity can be dangerous to society because it benefits people with malicious intent to commit misdeeds that could quickly go out of hand.
