Marcel Duchamp was born in the Upper Normandy region of France to Eugene and Lucie Duchamp on July 28, 1887. His family was an incredibly cultured one. Aside from the art of painter and engraver Emile Nicolle filling the house, the family enjoyed playing chess, reading books, painting and making music together. Four out of his seven brothers and sisters actually became successful artists. At 8, Duchamp followed in his brothers' footsteps and left home to begin schooling at the Lycée Pierre–Corneille a school run by Jesuits to educate children of the aristocracy and bourgeoisie. Duchamp attended the school for eight years where he was locked into an educational routine that focused on intellectual development and academic excellence. He himself was not a spectacular student but he thoroughly enjoyed mathematics and even won two prizes in the subject. But Duchamp received the most important prize for a drawing in 1904 at his commencement. He used this moment to validate his decently recent decision to become an artist
