The City of Trees
Boise, Idaho is located in a wide river valley at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. In 1834 the Hudson Bay Company established Fort Boise for the purpose of a fur trading location and as a general trading port along the Oregon Trail route. The fort was located 40 miles from the present day city of Boise and was situated at the mouth of the Boise River. The area of present day Boise was named "Les Bois" which is French for "wooded". It is said that US Army Officer Captain Benjamin Bonneville said "Les bois, les bois, voyez les bois" which translates to "the trees, the trees, look at the trees" because they were seeing the cottonwood lined Boise River after their long journey across the more barren Snake River Plain. The image pictured above is the original 1863–plat map of Boise City. According to the Boise Department of Arts and History, a meeting was held on July 7, 1893 by one of the original valley settlers, Thomas David who proposed the city be split into 10 blocks divided evenly on either side of Main Street. Twenty families were in attendance and each were able to write their name on one of the evenly split pieces of land. By 1864 "Boise" was incorporated as a city and became the Idaho territory's capital. In 1867, the original plat map had expanded to include around 140 additional blocks.
