Although Perry is a monstrous killer, Capote argues murderers with mental struggles cannot control their homicidal actions; therefore, the death penalty is unjust for the mentally unstable. Capote uses metaphor in Dr. Satten's observations to prove the insanity of Perry because of his blurred mental perception of his wrongdoing at the time of the murder. For one moment, the Clutters were seen as the abusive family in several incidences throughout Perry's life. A murderer is considered insane if they have a motive for their crime. Perry emphasizes that he had no intention in hurting the clutters because they were unlike other toxic people in his life, but ultimately his past was the overarching reason for his crime.
