Kuwait took the world stage on 2 August 1990 when Iraq, under the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, launched an assault on the nation. The Iraqi army received funding from the United States of America during the eight year Iran–Iraq War and were well prepared for the offensive, to later be known as the First Gulf War. Hussein wished to conquer both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in order to control up to 20% of the world's oil supply. American military use of force in the First Gulf War began on 17 January 1991, eight days after peace talks between United States Secretary of State James Baker and Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz proved unproductive. General Norman Schwarzkopf along with General Colin Powell became military figureheads while also gaining a sort of celebrity status back stateside. Western media portrayed the Iraqi army as a truly formidable enemy; however, Coalition forces made short work out of Hussein's military (USHistory.org).
